What is style in art?
Individual – what distinguishes a person’s art from someone else’s. May apply to the medium or combination of media used, the means of application of media to the substrate, the nature of the substrate/s, the method of construction (sculpture, installations), innovative use of materials, subject matter, image composition, influences.
Collective – artists who work individually but where their work has common aspects – materials and media, methods of application, subject matter, image composition, influences. Often referred to by a collective term (fauvists, impressionists, surrealists). Also ‘schools’ where an artist will have a group of artists working within his studio. ‘Junior’ artists will assist with large projects, learning from the master (eg: Michaelangelo). Artists may also work together.
